27 Feb 05 Urgent: Oppose House Arrest Without Trial

This is the Bill which is rushing through a new law to allow the Home Secretary - a politician, remember - to put people under house arrest without trial. This is in line with the horrific practices of oppressive regimes, e.g. Apartheid South Africa's 'banning orders'. Please don't let this happen in our country without speaking out against it.

Even some Labour MPs are describing this Bill that Blair's Labour government is pushing through as unthinkable, totalitarian, anti-democratic, unacceptable, etc. Brian Sedgemore, a Labour MP, in a speech in Parliament on Wednesday 23rd February said:

"... in situations such as this, politics become incompatible with conscience, principle, decency and self-respect. Regrettably, in such situations, the desire for power and position predominates...... I am reminded that our fathers fought and died for liberty - my own father literally - believing that these things should not happen here, and we would never allow them to happen here. But now we know better. The unthinkable, the unimaginable, is happening here."
