Local Elections 2008A healthy local environment - Decent local services - A strong local voiceMK ExpansionThe Green Party is the only party opposed to the expansion of Milton Keynes on greenfield sites. Other parties have accepted the Labour Government’s plan to double the size of MK. As well as the loss of greenfields around MK the facilities within MK such as the roads and the hospital would not be able to cope with the extra load. A Green council would hold a referendum on MK expansion. Existing estates should not be redeveloped without the consent of those already living in them.HousingGreens want more social rented housing to reduce waiting lists and homelessness. The other parties planned to build just 1 out of every 20 new homes for social rent. At the Local Plan Public Inquiry the Greens were the only party that argued for the figure to be increased to at least 3 out of 20. Now the council is supporting 25%. If the higher figure had been introduced when Greens suggested it there would be several hundred more social rented homes now and several hundred fewer families on the waiting list.Local ServicesThe Green Party wants to see vital local services within walking distance for everyone. Green councillors will protect schools, libraries, post offices and other local services from cuts, closures and privatisation. We aim to ensure that basic facilities (food shops, banks, pharmacies and post offices) are located within all residential areas of a certain size, and within 15 minutes’ walk in all urban and suburban areasSchoolsThe Green Party wants to provide a free lunch in all state schools every school day to every pupil. This will be a balanced nutritious lunch including local and organic non-GM food, free from additives. Greens oppose Sir Frank Markham school becoming a privatised Academy.Public TransportWe desperately need better bus services in Milton Keynes, especially more services in the evenings. Greens would deliver them. Greens are opposed to the down-grading of bus lanes in MK being implemented by the Lib Dems. Greens oppose the widening of the M1 and would use the money saved to invest in re-instating rail services from MK to Oxford, Aylesbury, Cambridge and Luton.Speed LimitsGreens want lower speed limits on grid roads to make them safer, to reduce CO2 emissions, to reduce noise for nearby residents and to make them more convenient for buses. The council recently voted to consider a reduction on just one stretch of the H8 near West Bletchley. Greens would reduce speed limits on all grid roads. The Liberal Democrat council considered reducing grid road speed limits a couple of years ago but dropped the idea after just 1% of residents objected. Greens care about road safety and the environment and are made of stronger stuff than the Lib Dems. Greens would introduce a safer 20mph speed limit in all built-up areas (except trunk roads and grid roads). In particular this would apply on residential roads. This would make the streets safer places, especially for children.CyclingTo encourage walking and cycling Greens would properly maintain the Redways and not put up unnecessary barriers to hinder cyclists.Climate ChangeGreens are committed to tackling climate change at every level with renewable energy and energy efficiency, not nuclear power. We want to see solar panels on new houses and support plans for a wind farm near Emberton. Greens would insulate for free every dwelling in England and Wales over the next five years. The proposal would cover loft insulation, cavity wall insulation or where that is not appropriate internal or external wall insulation, hot water tank insulation, and draught-proofing. Every householder would be offered advice, including advice on potential fuel savings, and free insulation appropriate to their home.RecyclingGreens want to see more recycling and no incinerator in MK.Local polices for the wards being contestedWolverton ward- Greens oppose expansion of TESCO store because it would harm smaller shops in Wolverton, New Bradwell and Stony Stratford and increase traffic on local roads - Revitalise Wolverton town centre and a village square for New Bradwell High St - Better bus shelters and facilities at Agora - New building at Wolverton station to include waiting room, toilet and ticket office - More Redways for pedestrians and cyclists in the older parts of Wolverton and New Bradwell - Re-open sub Post Office in New Bradwell - Set up Car Clubs in Wolverton and New Bradwell to tackle parking problems in Victorian streetsMiddleton ward- Ensure that new estate roads are completed with proper surfaces and road markings and are adopted by the council - Better access for pedestrians from parking areas to homes to avoid parked vehicles blocking narrow streets such as Mews - Retain V10 as a grid road and put shops on a new High street in Oakgrove development - Better information for residents when road changes and closures take place - Encourage more children to walk or cycle to school to decrease problems with parking outside schools - More involvement for local residents in development plans for the area - Don’t turn Salford Rd into a residential street that will suffer from rat-running - Ensure that new developments have bus services as soon as houses are occupied
