Milton Keynes Local Elections 2007

Vote Green in 2007: A healthy local environment - Decent local services - A strong local voice

no to mk expansion

The Green Party is the only party opposed to the expansion of Milton Keynes on greenfield sites. Other parties have accepted the Labour Government’s plan to double the size of MK. As well as the loss of greenfields around MK the facilities within MK such as the roads and the hospital would not be able to cope with the extra load. A Green council would hold a referendum on MK expansion. Existing estates should not be redeveloped without the consent of those already living in them.

affordable social rented housing

Greens want more social rented housing to reduce waiting lists and homelessness. The other parties planned to build just 1 out of every 20 new homes for social rent. At the Local Plan Public Inquiry the Greens were the only party that argued for the figure to be increased to at least 3 out of 20. Now the council is supporting 25%. If the higher figure had been introduced when Greens suggested it there would be several hundred more social rented homes now and several hundred fewer families on the waiting list.

keep local services local

The Green Party wants to see vital local services within walking distance for everyone. Green councilors will protect schools, libraries, post offices and other local services from cuts, closures and privatisation. Greens oppose Sir Frank Markham school becoming a privatised Academy.

usable bus and rail services

We desperately need better bus services in Milton Keynes, especially more services in the evenings. Greens would deliver them. Greens oppose the widening of the M1 and would use the money saved to invest in re-instating rail services from MK to Oxford, Aylesbury, Cambridge and Luton.

road safety

Greens want lower speed limits on grid roads to make them safer. The Liberal Democrat council considered reducing grid road speed limits but dropped the idea after just 1% of residents objected. Greens care about road safety and the environment and are made of stronger stuff than the wishy-washy Lib Dems. To encourage walking and cycling Greens would properly maintain the Redways and not put up unnecessary barriers to hinder cyclists.

local action on climate change

Greens are committed to tackling climate change at every level with renewable energy and energy efficiency, not nuclear power. We want to see solar panels on new houses and support plans for a wind farm near Emberton.

Greens want to see more recycling and no incinerator in MK.
