MK Green Fringe Meetings

The aim of the new MK Green Fringe forum is to provide a meeting point for anyone in the Milton Keynes area who is interested in 'green' issues such as recycling, renewable energy, low impact buildings and environmentally friendly transport. This is not just a meeting for members of the Green Party, but an attempt to set up a wider 'Green Forum' in the area where like minded people can network, swap information, and inspire one another. Each meeting will focus on one particular theme or project, usually involving a visit to somewhere interesting.

Previous MK Green Fringe Events

Green Fringe Meeting 5: November 17 2003: 6 - 8pm. A visit to Sust, the brand new fairtrade/green/global shop in Milton Keynes. Sust will have been open for about four weeks by then. We will have a chance to hear about the Global Centre's Sust project, see the new shop, buy stuff, offer to help etc. We will also make time for the important networking aspect of the Green Fringe meetings - a chance for anyone in the group to share information or ask for help. Directions: Sust is/will be situated in the Food Centre in CMK shopping district (Sainsburys, Iceland, and Waitrose are all there). Sust is/will be in the row of little shops on the opposite side of the Food Centre to Waitrose. Close neighbours of Sust are Whittards, Holland and Barrett, and the camping/outdoor shop.

MK Green Fringe Meeting 4: 27 September 2003 Apple Day at The Well at Willen. Jointly with MK LETS

We will join in with the Apple Day activities of apple picking and pressing, plus apple related games. There will be a short talk at 11am by Peter Hughes of MK LETS (lets=local exchange and trading system) explaining the LETS system of local bartering/work-exchange, and how you can join. The Well at Willen is a community engaged in collective living, with an emphasis on working for peace and justice, and values of spirituality and hospitality. They have a large vegetable garden, orchard, and chickens. Directions: head into Willen Village from the H4 (Dansteed Way) along Millington Gate, go straight across the big circle/roundabout, towards Willen church. At the T junction near the church, turn right into Newport Road. The driveway to The Well is signposted a little way along, on the right.

MK Green Fringe Meeting 3: 22 July 2003 7.30pm

Visit to the Low Impact Living Initiative at the Redfield Community, Winslow (www.lowimpact.org). Lili run a range of weekend courses on ecological topics such as compost toilets, straw bale building, bio diesel and about a dozen more. Shared transport to Winslow will be available, leaving CMK at 7pm (email peter@mkgreens.org.uk to arrange a lift).

MK Green Fringe Meeting 2: Thursday May 8th, 7.30pm.

Visit to National Energy Centre, Davy Avenue, Knowlhill, Milton Keynes

The National Energy Foundation provides a UK wide advice and information service about energy saving and renewable energy. They run several renewable energy projects, which we will have a chance to hear about, and there are also some renewable energy installations that we can look at. There will also be time for general information sharing, networking and inspiration between MK Green Fringe members.

MK Green Fringe Meeting 1: Thursday Feb 13th 8.30pm.

Visit to Tools for Self Reliance Tool Recycling Project, Pennyland, Milton Keynes

Venue: Michael's Akyre, Sterling Close,

This local project has been running for over 10 years and now has a very well equipped workshop where old unwanted tools collected from the local community are cleaned, repaired and restored. Most of these tools would have been thrown away. Instead they are assembled into toolkits and shipped to craftspeople in developing countries.

During the evening you will get a chance to tour the workshop, see it in action, and hear about how this successful project runs on a day to day basis.

For more information phone Peter Richardson, 01908 586002, email peter@mkgreens.org.uk.

It is planned to hold MK Green Fringe meetings every two months. If you have any ideas for possible visits, topics or projects, do get in touch.
