Local Elections 2006

A healthy local environment - Decent local services - A strong local voice

mk expansion

The Green Party is the only party opposed to the expansion of Milton Keynes on greenfield sites. Other parties have accepted the Labour Government’s plan to double the size of MK. As well as the loss of greenfields around MK the facilities within MK such as the roads and the hospital would not be able to cope with the extra load. A Green council would hold a referendum on MK expansion. Existing estates should not be redeveloped without the consent of those already living in them.

housing

Greens want more social rented housing to reduce waiting lists and homelessness. The other parties plan to build just 1 out of every 20 new homes for rent. Greens would increase this to at least 3 out of 20.

local services

The Green Party wants to see vital local services within walking distance for everyone. Green councilors will protect schools, libraries, post offices and other local services from cuts, closures and privatisation.

We desperately need better bus services in Milton Keynes, especially more services in the evenings. Greens would deliver them.

transport

Greens want lower speed limits on grid roads to make them safer. The Liberal Democrat council considered reducing grid road speed limits but dropped the idea after just 1% of residents objected. Greens care about road safety and the environment and are made of stronger stuff than the wishy-washy Lib Dems.

climate change

Greens are committed to tackling climate change at every level with renewable energy and energy efficiency, not nuclear power. We want to see solar panels on all new houses, and better encouragement and incentives for people to fit renewable energy systems to existing houses. The Green Party is the only party whose transport policy would seriously address climate change: other parties support air travel and road building rather than better buses and trains!

Greens want to see more recycling and no incinerator in MK.
